  • Makes me both angry and teary!  Why do people have to be so ugly??

  • That’s sad. I don’t understand why people do things like that.

  • Ugh.  Is it so hard for people to just be good for once?

  • This is sickening. It makes me sad that people would harm those gorgeous trees.  Nothing surprises me anymore, Nessa…sigh…..

  • I’m loading my shotgun right now…

  • How disgusting and cruel. What a shame!

  • What an awful thing to do.  I hope whoever did this is caught and punished, but the trees can never be replaced.

  • That’s just wrong wrong wrong

  • The trees and the animals on this planet deserve as much respect as humans.  We have to be good stewards of the earth.

  • Those fuckers…the horticulturist in me wishes to chainsaw some houses…

They probably did it so they could see out unto the sea (I would think this would raise the property value?)…so I would question those along the boardwalk….

  • Just dangerous vandalism for the sake of it ! Hope they catch those responsible. I’m surprised that first tree is still standing it’s been cut through so far all the way round !

  • Too bad they couldn’t just spraypaint. At least that can be washed away. Disgusting

  • I agree that this was intentional girdling, not just someone playfully cutting at a tree near them.  To cut the bark that provides nutrients all the way around effectively kills the tree even better than if you uproot it.

The authorities should be checking into anyone who now has a clear view of the ocean that they wouldn’t have had before.  Jus’sayin.

  • @youandwhosearmy - @IMChurchmouse - Those trees are not directly in front of the houses (and the houses are across the road, but way back from the road; most of them have trees in front of them, to block the view… of the dragstrip). The people who live in that area are the most angry. It makes it more ugly, which can’t be good for property value.

I just read that a couple of nurseries, one from Bridgeport and one from Fairfield are donating six “shade trees” (they didn’t specify). The rumours are that some of the people who own the houses across the road are chipping in to try and replace the rest of the trees.

I think it was vandals (late teens/early 20s) that wanted to see the trees go down in the big storm. The neighbourhood watch there is probably going to be more vigilant the next time there is a storm. These “people” got away with it once, and got publicity… there are a LOT of trees at St Mary’s. They may try it again. I have a feeling that next time, it will be a different park, though… probably Seaside Park (PT Barnum’s estate).

I think it is sad that anyone would do something so malicious. It sickens me when it happens anywhere, but St Mary’s By the Sea? That’s one of my favourite places in the world, where I’ve hung out since before I was born… where my mom broke records with her lead-foot… where my grandparents went for picnics and summertime walks when they were young.

  • @styx_site - Those trees were there for decades. The city’s working on getting new trees, but those sycamores meant something to people… St Mary’s is a place that people have loved for years and years.

I hope they catch the vandals, too, but I’m not holding my breath. That city’s got a lot of problems with “bigger” crimes and not enough cops.

  • @psybels - they shouldn’t even be doing THAT. Why is there any need to deface or hurt a tree, y’know?

@Chatamanda - They had to remove it because it was so close to falling over. I’m pretty sure that’s what the vandals wanted… the big storm they had (while they chainsawed the trees) included 60mph winds. I’m pretty sure they wanted to see the trees topple over.

@Ricardo98 - Unfortunately, a lot of folks don’t see it that way.

@betterdesigned -  Thank you for your comments. Yeah. Some people just do messed up stuff. It’s disgusting. That area (Historic Black Rock) is basically the last part of Bridgeport that’s pretty… so of course, someone’s got to f it up. Seaside Park (PT Barnum’s estate; he left it to the city of Bridgeport) used to be really pretty, too. I remember when I was a little kid and the Christopher Columbus statue was chiseled at. And of course, everything got spray painted. It’s just so ridiculous… it’s like going into your own house and knocking holes into the walls and spray painting over photos of your grandparents.

  • @TrainTrack - You’re my hero Thank you. Next time they have a big storm at night, you and I can cruise thru Saint’s with coffee and your gun. ::: hugs :::

  • @SamsPeeps - I wasn’t saying they should spraypaint, it would have just been a better alternative to killing the trees

some vandalism has gotten out of hand

  • @psybels - I’m sorry… I understood what you meant But yeah vandalism is pointless. Like I mentioned in a comment above, it’s like wrecking your own house. Why would ya do that? Silly.

  • @SamsPeeps - I’m always glad to help.

  • @TrainTrack - How do you take your coffee?

  • @SamsPeeps - I’ll just have a blueberry pomegranate juice…on the rocks.

  • Naturally I am supposed to divulge that anything you declare comes in with my own intellect
