The Sam: Update 03/26/10
Thank you, everyone, for waiting with us and for all of the sweet comments and messages. You made all of the waiting a bit easier on us. Thank you!
The Sam was released from the kitty-hospital today! He asked that I display no pictures; he’s been shaved quite a bit (they were searching for any wounds that may have caused his infection; they found none), and you know how much he cares about his appearance!
Other than having less fur, The Sam is pretty much back to his usual sweet self. He’ll be on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory (sp?) drugs for about a week or so. His tail was up, almost as straight up as usual, he was feisty and playful (when he’s sick, he just sort of sits there) and Ken and I got lots of love…
… But he wanted to take one of the assistants, I think her name is Rachel, home with him. He was just all over her! Rachel told me that she loves The Sam, and that she and the other two ladies there were squabbling a little over who would play with him this morning. I had to giggle over that… but I wasn’t surprised. The Sam is a ladies’ man.
Then I read over the notes they gave me, about his general health (they are putting him on a little diet to lose a pound or two; other than that, he is “extremely healthy”). At the bottom, they (hand)wrote, “Sam is a sweetie and a pleasure to have here.”
I put a gold star sticker on it and stuck it on the fridge. My baby’s such a good boy.
==========================================================================Vet called: The X-Rays show no fractures. The Sam has a serious infection. They are shaving him and checking his entire body for any wounds. They think it may be related to the old wound from a couple of months ago, because his white blood cells and antibodies are very high, indicating a chronic infection (the old wound may have healed, but it may have left infection behind on the inside, basically).
The good news is, he ate a nice lunch, and wagged his tail shortly after the first dose of antibiotics.
They are not ruling out that saddle-thing (some kind of blood clot that some older cats get, can be very dangerous), although they think it is “just” this infection.
The Sam will be there until at least tomorrow, then sent home with some oral antibiotics (hopefully, in drop form… The Sam HATES pills). They may keep him an extra night, just to be safe, depending on his reaction to the meds.
Apparently, he has made a few friends there. The doctor told me: “He’s a good little cat.” (I had to laugh at that. The Sam is nearly 22 pounds… he is NOT “little”!). The assistant that we saw earlier said that he was playing with her for a little while. The other assistant (Lindsay?) who is going to be there all night, said he was, “A dreamboat.”
I’m all crying and worried about the little man, and he’s makin’ time.
Thank you all for waiting with me. It was nice not to have to wait alone.
I’ll update tomorrow, when I know more.
Thanks again. You guys are awesome!!!
==========================================================================
I am a mess.We had to bring The Sam to the vet today. This is the first time he’s ever had to stay at the kitty-doctor’s office overnight.
There is something wrong with his back, near his cute little fuzzy butt. His tail isn’t working. He had a hard time hopping up onto the chair next to me in the examination room, and I felt my heart crack.
It could be any number of things. They don’t think anything is broken, but they’re taking X-rays just to be certain. The other things that it could be… I can’t even bring myself to write them down.
He was purring and giving us head-butts/kitty-love… and flirting with the cute assistant (The Sam has always been something of a ladies’ man). He’s a big, strong cat with no other health issues. But he’s almost ten years old…
The waiting is killing me.
Will you wait with me, please?
He is my baby. I really can’t handle this.
I’ll update when I hear from the vet.

Happened to my dog when she was young. She used to jump up very high. She displaced a disc in her vertebrae. Cost us $5000 to have it fixed. She started being unable to use her back legs, couldn’t control her bladder, or tail.
VERY REVERSIBLE!!!! I don’t even remotely think it’s life-threatening. BEST OF LUCK!!!!!!!!!
Yes. I’ll wait to hear – and pray while I wait. Cats can be family – I know Sam’s a part of yours. Praying for your baby… that they can fix what’s wrong or that this is just a fluke… I look forward to hearing a good prognosis.
Poor Sam!!! Of course we will wait.
here waiting………..
Our cat, Wren, was with us for 18 years……he belonged to my SIL before that, I think she had him for a year or more. Sam’s got at least another nine years to go. That’s what I think anyway.
Poor cat, he’s so handsome.
I would have this blog retitled as ShazSAM…. but i will hope with you.
OMG big prayers. Vets can do amazing things sometimes.
Hang tight…I’ve been thru three huskies, three corgis and one puggle..I k now it can be nerve wracking. (we’ve here for you!)
Waiting patiently with you!
Count me in.
Fingers, eyes, and toes crossed that He is ok!!!!!
*sitting in chair waiting*
Sending warm thoughts and intense well-wishes your way.
Poor kitty! Hope he’s okay.
Poor guy, hope he gets better soon.
Glad to hear that they have an inkling – and now I’ll be praying that the (hopefully in drop form) antibiotics work! Thanks for the update!
Hoping for a fast recovery!!
Delighted to hear the prognosis is good!!!
Glad to hear he’s doing better!
Sending many warm fuzzies.
I’ll wait. I hope he’s okay.
Yay! Kitty is gonna be better! I’m glad to hear it!
I’m glad that things are looking up for him. I will pray for both you and Sam. I know how close a bond can be formed with a pet.
I hope your beautiful kitty has a speedy recovery ASAP! I think it’s the vet’s job to make people be realistic, so they also tell you about all the terrible things that could also happen. Hopefully none of that stuff is relevant though!
This hits close to home because recently I was away at college and my cat got in a fight with another cat and his wounds became infected and he became very sick. Then two of my other cats (more like kittens) got spayed, and one of them started drooling and bleeding from the mouth and nose. I tried to come back as early as I could, but by the time I came back all three were fine. Yay modern advances in veterinary!!!
Sam was making time, sweet. I like him already.
My puppy went to the Vet today for her spaying. She came home around 5, is still sleeping it off. Poor thing. I’m just glad she got to come home today.
you hang in there – sounds like he is a spunky guy, for sure, so I bet he will be just fine…thinking of you…REALLY BIG HUGS.
xxxxoooo
Ohhhh what a handsome boy……. I’m so glad he’s doing better. hugs ~ V
*Hugs* to you and Sam. Keep us updated!
Awwh what a sweety. I hope he makes a swift recovery!
I am there for you and waiting with you. I am sure that things will turn out ok, especially if The Sam is being allowed to go home on oral ABX.
Love you Nessa, I hope you don’t have to go through another heart ache.
I’ll keep waiting
Hang in there he’ll make it through!
thinking of you and sam! so glad they think it’s (probably) not a saddle thrombus! you can count on more good thoughts from here…
RYC: I just did 569 types. Awwww yeah.
Oooo. I’m glad he’s ok!! :0)
Waiting with you every step of the way. Please keep us updated.
@Schristian - ::: bows ::: You are THE Masher of the Keys!
Sorry, I wasn’t around . . . but glad it’s a good albeit guarded prognosis. Sending love.
So glad he’s doing better. Eating is definitely a good sign! Poor guy. I hate when one of my “boys” gets sick.
I’m glad to hear the update… doesn’t surprise me that he charmed the vets. Here’s to Sam!
that is good news! glad you keep your buddy and he improes.
So glad to hear that he is recovering nicely.!!!!
I got a little teary reading this – happy tears that he’s doing so much better. What a gorgeous affectionate boy. ((((hugs)))) ~ V
Good news!
I’m so glad he’s home!!! He’s such a ladies man
wanting to take home that assistant!
I’m glad he’s okay
He is beyond being a ladies man CB…he made a female pit bull fall in love with him!
Your good news made me happy.
haha…what a sweet heart

@Bricker59 - Ain’t he a one? And I think there may be a new love story in the making (with another cat, this time). Ken has taken to calling him “Samanova”. LOL I’m glad it makes you happy.

@venice - ::: hugs ::: you are so sweet. Thank you! He’s definitely Mistah Love-ah Man! LOL
@tomorrow_may_rain - I’m so glad your kitties are okay! Thank you
@bosefius - I’m telling you! That cat’s got THREE vet assistants “after him” now… not to mention one of the vets. How’s your puppy? What kind of doggie? What’s her name?
@youandwhosearmy - LOL Yeah. Ken kept telling him, “Sam… you’re the maaaaaaaan!”
yay!
@SamsPeeps - She’s good, supposed to be taking it easy, which means running around being a goof ball. She’s a 5 month old Norwegian Elkhound.
Yay! Did you get liquid antibiotics? I’m glad he’s feeling better. Don’t you just love it when people tell you your baby is the best?
Hope the little guy continues to improve…
@bosefius - I never heard of he breed; I’m glad you gave me the link. What a beautiful dog! What did you name her?
@flatpick46 -
Hey you!
@dingdongdingbat - Thank you. Me too!
@jacksoncroons - Nah, the Clavamox is in pill form, but he’s taking them well
OOH! Gotta go. My husband made me pancakes!
Happy birthday!!!!
@SamsPeeps - We had never heard of it either, it was a fluke we got her. We had been looking for a dog but were being picky about what we wanted. Wanted a puppy, smaller breed, female. Couldn’t find anything so we had decided to not worry about it right now and wait.
Out of the blue, a good friend calls us New Year’s Day and says she can get us exactly what we want. Autumn (that’s her name) came to live with us an hour later. And she is perfect. Bonded with the kids almost instantly, my wife and I took a little longer. The breed itself is completely loyal once they bond, to the point that if something happens and they get separated they have been known to starve themselves out of depression.
I will get some new pictures up of Autumn soon, if she will hold still long enough
i’m glad he’s okay. pets fill so many holes in our lives. i don’t know what i’d do without my beagles.
I think I will like this Sam~ glad to hear he is healing. ~and I love that you put his note on the fridge~ with a sticker star.
@bosefius - LOL I love the name Autumn! So pretty! I can relate to the picture-taking… every time I try to get a pic of The Sam, he moves JUST at the right moment. So many blurry pictures!!!! I’m glad you got Autumn. She sounds PERFECT!
@thomas_michael - Thank you. I’m glad too… like, when we saw him yesterday and he was so much more energetic, like his usual self, wanting to play and stuff, I got the giggles from being happy. Did that even make sense? LOL When I get really happy, I giggle like a moron and cannot stop myself. It can be embarrassing. Beagles happen to be one of my husband’s dream dogs (we’d have one or two by now, but we’ve always lived in apartments that were just too small or didn’t allow dogs); I love them, too. They’re so CUTE! How many do you have?
@WildWomanOfTheWest - I know he’d love you… he LOVES dogs and you have, what? SIX now?
The love of Sam’s life is Sylvia.
Here is another Sylvia story.
The Sam would totally love you (they know animal folks when they see ‘em)… and your dogs!
